Axial Vibrations of PTFE Bellows Expansion Joint

Abstract: This paper deals with axial vibrations of non-metallic PTFE bellows expansion joint. Previous work carried out by researchers was on axial vibrations of metallic bellows with fixed end conditions, and considered bellows with elastically restrained with welded ends and carrying a lumped mass such as a valve or an instrument, and found the effect of pressure on the axial natural frequencies. The work presented here explores axial vibrations of a PTFE bellow. A transcendental equation derived for the three modes of vibrations by previous researchers was used to find axial vibrations for fixed end condition of PTFE bellows. The present work however included an experimental investigation of PTFE bellows, which was not considered earlier and was used as basis for validation of theoretical results. It was found to be in good agreement.
